Amy Cervini

Vocalist Amy Cervini has garnered acclaim in her home of Canada and adoptive home of New York. Her eponymous quartet, with pianist Michael Cabe, bassist Mark Lau and drummer Ernesto Cervini, has released two albums – 2007’s Famous Blue and 2009’s Lovefool – with track lists comprised of pop tunes from Weezer, the Cardigans and Leonard Cohen, standards from the American Songbook and original pieces from modern jazz composers.

An accomplished pianist and saxophonist, Ms. Cervini has made her name as a dynamic vocalist. Praised by the Toronto Star for her “freshly appealing voice” and Time Out New York for her ability to “straddle the line between confessional balladeering and breezy swing,” these traits have made her a regular at venues throughout New York – from the 55 Bar to Carnegie Hall – and around the world. This versatility is manifest in her many projects. In addition to leading the Amy Cervini Quartet, she is also an integral part of a new project called Jazz Country, featuring clarinetist Anat Cohen, guitarist Jesse Lewis, cellist Yair Evnine and bassist Matt Aronoff. She was at the helm of a tribute to the late Blossom Dearie at the Blue Note in December 2008, fronting a band comprised of Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Frank Kimbrough on piano, Dan Loomis on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. A new incarnation of her earlier group Couples Therapy is set to debut in 2010, with fellow forward-looking vocalist Jo Lawry, and a rhythm section of pianist Oded Lev-Ari, bassist Matt Aronoff, and percussionist James Shipp. She has been featured as a back-up vocalist with New York band Pharaoh’s Daughter, the vocal jazz ensemble Monday Off and composer Joseph Philips’ Numinous+, with whom she recorded the Vipassana suite.

Ms. Cervini thrives on working with those who share her vision of music-making, those rare accomplices becoming long-standing allies. Of her quartet, she says, “The ACQ was born out of friendship, musical simpatico and long rehearsals fueled by Blue Moon and lots of laughs.” This kinship comes across, as the Pittsburgh Herald Tribune notes: “She presents songs with enough heart to convince a listener of her sincerity and enough musical talent to make it worth listening.“
